The Super Awesome Pinball Show: Charlie Emery Interview, Franchi Drops Hints
The Super Awesome Pinball Show was joined last week by Charlie Emery from Spooky Pinball!! They talked about a lot of interesting topics, but before Charlie joined, hosts Christian Line and Christopher Franchi (who is working with Chicago Gaming Company) had the following exchange:
On if we are going to see a game from Chicago Gaming Company soon:
Franchi: You are going to see one soon. I can’t say what it is, I can’t even say whether it is a remake or an original game, I can just say you’re going to see one soon. And there is a whole lot of fun on the horizon.
Christian: Possibly by the end of the year?
Franchi: Yeah yeah yeah.
Christian: There have been some rumors…obviously you know so you can’t divulge, but I’ve heard it is going to be either Cactus Canyon or Theatre of Magic…
Franchi: I am going to say this much just so I can shoot it down…it’s not [Theatre of Magic].
Later in the podcast they were joined by Charlie Emery from Spooky Pinball – here are just a few highlights:
On how things are going at Spooky Pinball:
Charlie Emery: Doing really really well all things considered…we bounced back from a couple month shutdown due to COVID. The state of Wisconsin put us all on lockdown earlier this year to be careful. And we abided by that fully. We’ve honestly expanded production quite a bit, almost 60%, to get caught up. Because I told everybody they would have their Rick and Morty game within 18 months and didn’t want to disappoint anybody. So now the pressure of keeping that production line going kicks in after Rick and Morty, which should be done a little bit ahead of schedule. Early 2021 and then…we’ll see what’s next.
On supply chain issues:
Charlie Emery: We’ve run into supply issues of every type and size, things you just don’t usually worry about having in stock. Like HDMI cables and plastic for your displays and printed pieces and things like that. For a while there a lot of that stuff was unavailable because the plastic was going to banks and people were setting up home offices and suddenly you can’t find HDMI cables…but we’re doing the best we can.
On Total Nuclear Annihilation 2.0:
Charlie Emery: TNA 2.0 is going to happen, it is just a matter of when. So everything that Scott [Danesi] is working on [with TNA], it is more bang for the future as well. Something else we can add to the game to make it that much better when it re-comes out again. And I’m not saying that is going to be soon because we are busy enough at it is. But TNA 2.0 will live. We’re excited about it. We know what is going to be in it physically. Minor changes, we’re not going to change it drastically because we want all the games to play the same.
On clear coats:
Charlie Emery: As far as clear coats today, I don’t believe it is so much EPA regulation or anything that is keeping people from finding the special sauce to make this all work. Obviously what we’re doing [at Spooky Pinball] is pretty darn decent. But if you go back and look at those Williams playfields from the 90s, clear was very very thin on those boards back then. They were tough as nails but [the clear coat] was very very thin. People today want it more shiny, they want thicker clear, they don’t want to feel the inserts. It is just a whole different ballgame as far as making a product that everybody is content with. I honestly don’t believe our playfields are as shiny as everybody else’s but there is a reason for that. You trade the toughness for the super super bright and shiny stuff that is going to dimple like crazy. Just little things like that. There is so much more to it than I can even begin to discuss.
Charlie also talks about how COVID has effected manufacturing, talks about how Spooky is different than other pinball manufacturers, talks about Rick and Morty code and how much is left to come, talks about working with Cartoon Network, talks about the newest code update for TNA and TNA 2.0, about Spooky not doing a tiered model of games and the philosophy behind that, on the Spooky Fang Club, talks clear coat and playfield manufacturing, talks about Eric Meunier and Keith Elwin and Scott Danesi, talks GNR and Elvira, talks about working with CGC and the project they’re working on together, talks about David Van Es designing the next Spooky game, talks about the Harry Potter license, talks about being contacted by the Kardashian’s agent, and much more.
