In most modern pinball machines if the ball doesn’t hit a switch in a particular amount of time then the machine will perform a ball search. This is usually done by causing the solenoids to fire and moving the pinball mechanisms in order to free the ball. If this doesn’t work pinball machines are often programmed to also put a new ball in the shooter lane for the player to be able to continue play.
